Orpheus Choir was founded in 1929 by Arthur Fountain who was organist at the Preston Parish Church. Since then the choir has performed many of the large scale choral works but in the last twenty five years its repertoire has been widened. From 1983 onwards the choir has staged a Festival for Christmas in Preston Guild Hall - a Christmas Spectacular with choirs, band and dancers. In 1983 the choir represented Great Britain in the International Choir Festival in Montreux. It has also undertaken three European tours to Preston’s twin towns of Almelo in Holland and Recklinghausen in Germany.
There have been three conductors during the life of the choir. Arthur Fountain the founder who was succeeded by Harry Dodd, who was succeeded by Harry Duckworth who held the baton for 33years. The present conductor Roselise Gentile from Italy took over in January 2012. Paul Greenhalgh has been the choir’s accompanist since 2003.
The aims of the choir have always been to present worthwhile music to the people of Preston and surrounding areas. To provide the opportunity for people of all ages to sing a wide range of choral and other works.
The Choir is a registered Charity (No 512041) and has been a member of the
National Federation of Music Societies since 1936. (now Making Music)
